January 1 National Hangover Day

Today is National Hangover Day. Can you guess why? ;) Each year we promise ourselves that January 1st will be different. Each year we promise ourselves that finally, we will get up in the morning, refreshed. Then, we will take our dogs for a long walk in the forest and when we come back, will take a long shower and prepare and eat a healthy breakfast. And each year we fail. :D Why is that? Oh well, we never learn, do we? So, instead of beating ourselves up, let’s just try to cure the hangover.

Do you have any hangover cures?

those are the perfect steps to cure your hangover:

1. Drinking fluids.

Alcohol dehydrates your body, so drinking water can help you feel better even if the symptoms are nasty like diarrhea, sweating, or vomiting, as they are symptoms that you are dehydrated. Besides, as we all know, alcohol is a toxin, which your body wants to remove. And what is the best way to remove the toxins from the body? Yes, you guessed it. You should drink water. Yes, drink some. Yes, correct, but maybe a bit more? ;)

2. Getting some carbohydrates into your system.

Alcohol affects your brain as it decreases blood sugar levels, so to feel better you need to provide it some carbs. Even a glass of water with a bit of honey may suffice. And if you can eat, grab a piece of warm toast. And remember next time when you drink, snack, snack, and snack. It will help you feel better the next day.

3. Avoiding darker-colored alcoholic beverages.

According to a Harvard Health Publishing article clear liquors, such as vodka and gin, are less prone to inducing hangovers than dark ones, such as whiskey, red wine, and tequila. The reason behind that is that the amount of compounds in the clear beverages is lower than in the dark ones and some of the enzymes are particularly toxic. And no, white wine is not less toxic than red wine. It is more or less the same.

4. Taking a pain reliever

Some pain relievers are safe to use in moderation and may help with headaches, but some can be dangerous for your liver. If you are not sure what to take, ask a pharmacist at your local pharmacy or abstain from taking one.

5. Drinking coffee or tea.

It is better to avoid drinking tea or coffee when you are in a state of post-party misery. As both beverages are diuretics it can only make matters worse, not better. If you feel like drinking coffee is something you must do, drink it alongside plenty of water. Remember though, combining alcohol with caffeine (as seen in some mixed drinks or energy drinks with alcohol) can be risky, as the stimulating effects of caffeine may mask the sedative effects of alcohol, potentially leading to increased alcohol consumption and impaired judgment. So, if you are a fan of espresso martini or jaggerbomb, maybe it is better to limit the intake of those cocktails.

6. Taking B vitamins and zinc.

There is some good news too! People who regularly consume zinc and vitamin B, as opposed to those who don't, are less prone to experiencing hangovers. So, the next time you attend a party, keep this information in mind to save yourself from potential hangovers. ;)

7. Hair of the dog.

Say what? Yes, you heard correctly ;), but it is not what you think. Hair of the dog refers to the activity of drinking alcohol, usually beer to ease the symptoms of suffering from a cocktail flu. ;) Unfortunately, the hair of the dog cure is not the best way to recover.  Hangovers are a form of alcohol withdrawal, so as you can guess, adding more alcohol to your system does not help with battling the booze blues - it’s another ticket to Hangoverville.

As we navigate the delicate art of post-party recovery, armed with these tips and a touch of humor, let's bid farewell to the booze blues and embrace the promise of a hangover-free future. Here's to healthier celebrations and wiser choices in the year ahead!
